5. Optimise quality of life
Education
We will help you to understand why you have pain, why it persists and how pain is part of your body protecting you. This is important in ensuring that you know why we are using certain techniques and interventions and to answer any questions that you may have relating to your problem.
Manual Therapy
Hands-on therapy helps to move tight and stiff joints and muscles thereby promoting normal and comfortable movement. Re-establishing normal movement is a key part of the treatment process as it will reduce and relieve the pain. This is because if we are moving as we should, the brain has one less thing to worry about!
Therapeutic Exercise and Rehabilitation
Exercise is an important part of the rehabilitation process. The programme of activities aims to improve the mobility of stiff joints, restore normal control of movement, improve fitness and ensure that you are physically & mentally ready for the demands of day-to-day activities, work and sports.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain. The insertion of needles (single-use, disposable) trigger the release of numerous chemicals that have effects upon the nervous system in the tissues, spinal cord and brain.
Modern science based treatment
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
TENS is an effective treatment providing natural pain relief for acute and chronic pain. The unit is controlled by the user once the principles of application have been understood. Please click here for more information.
Mindfulness, Meditation, Breathing, Visualisation & Relaxation
These skills are extremely useful to learn for pain control and relief. Once deemed 'alternative', the techniques are now well understood and known to produce changes within the nervous system that bring about pain relief. Mindfulness stems from Buddhist thought and is concerned with the present moment and being aware and non-judgemental. This approach is recommended by the NICE guidelines for depression and can certainly have a role in pain management. Click here for several exercises.
Multidisciplinary Management
Pain management for chronic pain is best administered in a multidisciplinary mode. This means that the treatment programme draws upon the specialist knowlegde of pain medicine, physiotherapy and psychology to offer best care. To achieve this, Specialist Pain Physio works closely with pain consultants and psychologists. As part of the treatment you may be advised to seek a consultation with a pain consultant or psychologist to maximise your potential and to ensure most effective care.
