Chronic pain in sport and recurring sports injuries are very common and often affect performance and ability to participate.

Pain and injury are common experiences when playing sports or taking part in physical activity. Naturally there are injuries as a result of forced moves, sudden direction change, direct contact with another player and a lack of preparation. Other problems occur due to the frequency of participation (too often or infrequent bursts of unaccustomed exercise), the repetition (same position or movement such as cycling or running), the training load (increased load without adequate rest periods to allow adaptation) or a previous injury that has not fully resolved (return too early).

Similar to any musculoskeletal injury, the tissues can heal yet the pain persists. This is deemed to be a chronic problem as the pain continues to be experienced despite the fact that the tissues are healing and in many cases healed. For more information on chronic pain click here.
